The inability to read is one of the biggest obstacles to participating successfully in modern society. Statistics have shown that, in reading, over half the 16-17 -year-olds in Young Offender Institutions would not reach the level expected of an 11-year-old – and around 25% would struggle with what is expected of a 7-year-old.
An increasing number of children arrive in our primary schools lacking the early-years experiences that underpin a successful start in reading – and that is where ABC to read steps in. ABC to read recruit, train, screen and support Volunteer Reading Mentors, who mentor children whose progress in reading is lagging behind that of their peers. They work patiently together to find the fun that can be had in reading and they nurture a love of the written word. They dedicate, usually, two afternoons a week to working individually with children in their primary schools, and the results are amazing. Schools’ evaluations shown that over 95% of children make good or very good progress, not only in their reading but also in terms of improved self-image and their overall participation and academic progress.
The difference that ABC to read’s volunteers make to children’s lives cannot be overstated. It really is a gift that lasts a lifetime.
There will be a retiring collection after the concert to support the work of ABC to read.
