DESCRIPTION:This free family concert will include something for everyone\, 
 and the relaxed atmosphere of St Laurence's means the whole family are wel
 come.\nRefreshments from 4.30pm.\n\nThis year we are supporting ABC to rea
 d.\n\n\n(Charitable Incorporated Organisation No.1184968)\n\nThe inability
  to read is one of the biggest obstacles to participating successfully in 
 modern society. Statistics have shown that\, in reading\, over half the 16
 -17 -year-olds in Young Offender Institutions would not reach the level ex
 pected of an 11-year-old – and around 25% would struggle with what is ex
 pected of a 7-year-old.\n\nAn increasing number of children arrive in our 
 primary schools lacking the early-years experiences that underpin a succes
 sful start in reading – and that is where ABC to read steps in. ABC to r
 ead\, recruit\, train\, screen and support Volunteer Reading Mentors\, who
  mentor children whose progress in reading is lagging behind that of their
  peers. They work patiently together to find the fun that can be had in re
 ading and they nurture a love of the written word. They dedicate\, usually
 \, two afternoons a week to working individually with children in their pr
 imary schools\, and the results are amazing. Schools’ evaluations show t
 hat over 95% of children make good or very good progress\, not only in the
 ir reading but also in terms of improved self-image and their overall part
 icipation and academic progress.\nThe difference that ABC to read’s volu
 nteers make to children’s lives cannot be overstated. It really is a gif
 t that lasts a lifetime.\n\nThere will be a retiring collection after the
