The Choir

About the choir

One of the most remarkable qualities about the choir is that it performs concerts ‘off-copy’ – every choir member sings their part entirely from memory. In addition, the choir does not sing in the traditional arrangement of bass, tenor, alto and soprano, but in mixed formation. This enables the singers to fully engage with the other voice parts, creating a great aural blend. Below are some of the comments the choir has received:

Great, warm sound, very precise and well focused. ~ Mary King, COTY Finals

Full of vitality – I loved your richness and verve of performance. ~ Stuart Barr, COTY Finals

Powerful and great ensemble sound with beautiful sustained notes. ~ Eugene Skeefe, COTY Finals

Their singing is beautiful and faultless…the singers have an aura of professionalism about them. ~ Henley Standard

In performance the first thing you notice is the focused radiance of sound that comes from a well-trained group of voices who are clearly cruising and not having to push the tone at all. Then when they really turn up the gas, the fact that they sing off-copy entirely means that they can deliver that quality sound into an arresting  communication of the inner meaning of the music. It is a delight to listen to – bravo! ~ Bob Porter, Brandenburg Artistic Director

What we sing

The choir’s repertoire is varied and exciting, and changes throughout the year. The choir sings predominantly unaccompanied music including Bach, Palestrina and Rachmaninoff, but also modern pieces by Gorecki and James MacMillan. At the lighter end of the spectrum, the choir sings several jazz and pop pieces as well as spirituals and folk songs including pieces by Bob Chilcott and the Beatles. There is always something for everyone!

Where we sing

The choir enjoys a busy performance schedule with concert dates across southern England and further afield. Venues range from churches to national concert halls, with the main annual concert held at the Reading Concert Hall.

Concerts in 2016-17 took the choir to some beautiful locations between Oxfordshire and Central London. On 15th July 2017 the choir hosted a ‘Come & Sing’ event in Reading – an event that has proven hugely successful in previous years – where guests join us to learn, sing and perform a classical piece or movement. Keep an eye on our concert page for more detail of upcoming concerts.

More than just concerts…

Over the years, Reading Phoenix Choir has raised over £300,000 in support of various charities.

As well as a busy concert schedule, the choir participates in national and international competitions, BBC recordings, their own CD recordings, singing tours and run workshops with local schools to get young people excited and passionate about music. Click here for more details or to book us for an event.
