Every year the choir performs a concert in Reading’s grand Concert Hall. In 2020 this concert will be held on 7 March 2020 and features a performance of Bob Chilcott’s Five Days that Changed the World with our guests Berkshire Young Voices and Berkshire Children’s Choir, who will also perform some of their own pieces.
Five Days that Changed the World was written by Bob Chilcott for the Worcester International Festival for Young Singers in 2013, the UK’s first-ever non-competitive international youth singing festival, organised by Sing UK in association with the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat (ECA-EC).
The climax was the final night’s Gala Concert in Worcester cathedral, which included the World Premiere of this work conducted by the composer and involved all 400 young singers!
Five Days that Changed the World is a journey through 5 global events:
- Thursday 29 March 1455: The invention of printing
- Friday 1 August 1834: The abolition of slavery
- Monday 14 December 1903: The first powered flight
- Friday 28 September 1928: The discovery of penicillin
- Wednesday 12 April 1961: The first man in space
In each movement, music and words come together to create a strikingly vivid and personal account of each protagonist’s experience, from the printer seeing ‘each letter like a person’ to the astronaut commenting on the beauty of our planet from space.
The words for Five Days that Changed the World were written by Charles Bennett and you can read his brief insight into the piece here.
Other music to be performed at the concert will include pieces by John Sheppard, William Byrd, John Rutter, Charles Villiars Stanford, Gustav Holst, Hubert Parry and Kim André Arnesen.
