It was fabulous to be back singing an Armistice Day concert at the beautiful Douai Abbey, all in aid of ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity. The audience seemed to enjoy it too! Here’s what one ex-member had to say:
What a fantastic concert at Douai for Armistice day, the entrance was just beautiful in this acoustic. I am so pleased that Phoenix still start their concerts this way, it is enchanting for the audience. I loved the groupings of the pieces, each with a little story to guide you through the music. This was the first time I had seen the choir with their new director and he came across really well in the way he communicated with the audience and the choir – it really was a joy to watch. The setting of Douai Abbey was simply beautiful, a challenging singing environment but the hard work pays off and the sound is the reward.
The music, as always, was exquisite – full of beautiful sounds. The choir felt really together and connected. There wasn’t one piece I didn’t like! Particular favourites were the Howells’ Requiem (never heard this and it was lovely to be introduced to something new) and the Victoria was a gem as well. I think this was the piece the audience clapped after despite being asked to wait until the end of each set, but it really deserved it, such a wonderful piece. Lovely to hear some old classics too – the Bogoroditse is still wonderful.
In all a super evening for a super cause. I was desperate to be back up singing with you all. I miss Phoenix very much – the singing, the people, the buzz of performing. I will hopefully come back one day! Katie Dogra
Many other audience members left us lots of lovely feedback too:
This is the first concert that I have attended by this choir and I was moved by the quality of the voices and the care with which the music had been selected. Thank you. Simon Hawkins
As always, a very high standard of performance, and a most appropriate programme for the venue and the occasion. Denis Gilbert
Beautiful – superb voices. All in a magnificent setting. Tricia
Wonderful concert – you just get better and better! Thank you for a lovely evening. Ros Wigmore
I wanted to say how much we enjoyed the concert on Saturday. It was the first time in 12 years that I have sat and listened to the choir and I can only congratulate you all on the lovely sound you produced, your control of pitch and the sensitivity of the interpretation. Andrew Powell
Excellent – will come again. C Griffiths
